OVERVIEW

The University of Michigan School of Dentistry offers a Dental Postgraduate (formally known as Postdoctoral) Program in Restorative Dentistry starting for advancing training beginning in July, of each year and ending the following June. The program accepts between one and four participants annually.
The Postgraduate Restorative Dentistry Program at the University of Michigan is designed to enhance dentists’ skills in restorative procedures using proven, evidence- based diagnostic and treatment techniques. This one-year program aims to prepare dental professionals with comprehensive understanding of restorative dentistry. The program is a combination of theoretical classes and intense laboratory practices, training the participants how to perform restorations using various dental materials for both direct and indirect techniques, focusing on function and esthetics. Interdisciplinary collaboration with other fields such as occlusion, periodontology, cariology, radiology and oral pathology provides an integrated approach to restorative diagnose, planning and treatment. By the end of the program, participants will possess the knowledge to apply appropriate techniques and materials tailored to specific clinical situations, ensuring that restorative treatments are functional, long-lasting and esthetically pleasing. Additionally, the program prepare participants with advanced skills and knowledge, enhancing their competitiveness in the dental field and providing a strong foundation for those applying to the Graduate programs in the United States.

The Postgraduate Restorative Dentistry Program aims to train skilled professionals through a curriculum grounded in scientific evidence, offering an integrated, interdisciplinary education that prepares participants to diagnose, plan end executes restorative therapies that enhance both the functionality and esthetics. The mission is to contribute to oral health and individuals’ well-being, while maintaining standards of professional quality.

This program is designed to enhance both the breadth and depth of fundamental restorative principles and to correlate the oral sciences with clinical practice. Its major objective is the development of teachers and practitioners having broad knowledge in the biological sciences which are basic to debilitative oral disease processes and functional disturbances. Postgraduate students should have an aptitude and a desire to assume a role in the future of Restorative Dentistry training. The postgraduate students will enhance their basic knowledge in specific focus disciplines, obtain a working knowledge of scientific methodology as a foundation for evidence based practice, and if applicable participate in the teaching role under the mentorship of attending faculty.

The goals and objectives of this program are the emphasis on developing sound clinical judgment and skills based on evidence. The student’s study will enhance his/her ability to perform dental procedures, and the didactic courses will emphasize clinical decision making and treatment.

The Post graduate Program provides an option for a 9 month or 12 months course. In the 12-months course students are introduced to the latest dental digital technologies and advanced ceramics through didactic and hands-on-course. This provides a strong foundation on improving hand skills and clinical decision-making process.

Postgraduate students may also have the opportunity and should have the motivation and to be involved in research projects which should lead to publications at the end of the year. This will provide worldwide research recognition and the student will be awarded a Certificate.

It is coordinated through the Office of Academic Affairs and is awarded a Certificate of Completion at the end of the program.

Enrollment number: one (1) to five (5) postgraduate students will be accepted per year.


REQUIREMENTS

  • DDS or DMD equivalent
  • If your dental school instruction was not in English, you must provide documentation of English language proficiency by submitting iBT TOEFL scores. A minimum iBT TOEFL score of 84 or higher (less than 2 years old) is required
  • Official transcripts of all dental education completed
  • Three letters of recommendation

PROGRAM FEES

Tuition for the one-year program is $35,000 (USD).
