Dental Hygiene Faculty & Friends Participate in Ann Arbor Goddess Race

Twenty one members of the University of Michigan Dental Hygiene community participated in the Ann Arbor Goddess 5K and Mile Run/Walk to benefit the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance on May 8, 2016. They did so in memory of faculty members Kathy Yee and Chris Klausner who lost their valiant battle with ovarian cancer.

Kathy Yee (BSDH-Degree Completion 2009), a dental hygiene faculty member from 2011-2016, passed away on March 25, 2016.   Chris Klausner (BSDH 1972; MSDH 1973) was a faculty member for more than thirteen years when she passed away in 2010. Both were dedicated clinicians and educators who made a positive impact on patients, students, and the profession.

Established in 2011, the Michigan Ovarian Cancer Alliance promotes saving women’s lives through early detection of ovarian cancer and improved treatment outcomes.  The alliance provides community outreach, education, advocacy, resources and support throughout the state.

Those participating on the Tooth Goddesses team included Wendy Kerschbaum, Janet Kinney, Anne Gwozdek, Danielle Furgeson and daughter Katie, Jane Halaris and husband Tony, Mary Layher, Durinda Mattana, Jennifer Cullen and daughter Joy, Lisa Dodge, Karen Essell, Michelle Arnett, and Lorene Kline. In addition, Kathy Yee’s husband, Ray, participated as did Kathy’s sister, Karen Pittman, her daughter Alexandra Jones, son-in-law Nathan, and their two sons Graham and Sullivan.

Kerschbaum noted that, “this was a bittersweet day as we celebrated the memory of our two colleagues for their positive outlook on life and compassion for others.”
