School of Dentistry retains ranking as No. 1 in U.S. and No. 2 in the world

Ann Arbor, Mich., March 8, 2017 -–  For the second consecutive year, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry is rated as the top dental school in the United States and second in the world by an international publication that rates universities.

The 2017 QS World University Rankings analyzed information about 1,100 institutions in 74 countries. The annual report examines 46 specialties to help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools in the students’ areas of interest.

U-M has been the top dental school in the U.S. in the QS rankings for the last three years.  Last year it moved into the No. 2 spot internationally after being fourth in the world in 2015.

“There are many indicators of the high quality of education and research at our School of Dentistry, and we’re pleased to be rated highly on this QS ranking,” said Dean Laurie McCauley. “We’re proud that we’ve consistently been recognized among the leaders in dentistry over our 142-year history.  We’ve been able to achieve that because we have faculty, students and staff who strive to continually improve dentistry, teaching and research. That commitment produces an environment of excellence that we’re always working to improve.”

The rankings are based on a complex set of data from international surveys and other sources.  Among the criteria considered: an international survey of academics who rate the reputation of universities; the opinion of universities in terms of which institution’s graduates they are most likely to employ; research citations by paper; and a method called the “h-index” that measures the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar, or a group, such as a department or a university.

The top international dental school in the last two years is the University of Hong Kong. After U-M’s No. 2 spot internationally, the next highest-ranked U.S. dental schools are Harvard at No. 5, New York University at 11 and University of North Carolina at 12.

The rankings are a publication of the British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Company.  More information and the list of the top 50 dental schools in the world can be found on the QS website.
