Harold Slavkin was appointed dean of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry in August 2000, and is holder of the G. Donald and Marian James Montgomery Deans Chair in Dentistry. A graduate of USC with a B.A. in English literature and a D.D.S. from the School of Dentistry, Slavkin joined the faculty of the school in 1968 and was chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition from 1969 to 1975. As chairman/program director from 1975 to 1985, he led the first graduate program in craniofacial biology in the United States. He was the founding director of the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology and was the first holder of the George and MaryLou Boone Chair in Craniofacial Molecular Biology from 1990 to 1995. Between positions at USC, Slavkin served as the sixth director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the lead agency on the first-ever Surgeon Generals report on oral health, which was released in June 2000. |
