Welcome to the Student Research Program (SRP)

The Student Research Program (SRP) is designed to provide a rewarding research experience for DDS and Dental Hygiene candidates. This experience will provide an insider's perspective on research so that you can more fully appreciate the scientific and technological advances that influence the dental profession.

The SRP is a competitive research fellowship. If accepted into the program, participants are provided with a stipend for the summer as well as a modest budget for materials.

In the SRP, you will have the opportunity to:

- conduct research with a faculty member and research team.

- examine scientific literature and its relevance to dentistry.

- present your findings at local, as well as possibly national and international, scientific meetings.

- develop skills that will assist you later, regardless of whether you choose a career of clinical or academic dentistry.

- co-author a publication if appropriate.

Additionally, experience in the SRP will help you to determine whether the pursuit of a research career in the oral health sciences is right for you. "Through the Student Research Program, I worked in the Lopatin lab for three summers, and it opened my eyes to what I could really accomplish with a career in dentistry outside of the clinic. During my third and fourth year of Dental School, I was in the clinic and working with patients, and I realized then that I really enjoyed research and a career only in clinical dentistry would not satisfy my career goals. I decided to apply and was accepted to the Oral Health Sciences PhD Program at UM School of Dentistry." - Dr. Elizabeth Van Tubergen
