Program Requirements

  
  

The SRP is an intensive program that requires enthusiasm and considerable time, effort and commitment. It requires participation not only during the summer months, but also during the academic year.  

Student Research Program Application Cycle and Requirements

September Find a mentor.
Attend the Student Research Program Preview in early September.
October

Mentor Interview and Returning Student Mentor Interview forms are due in early October.

Once you have been assigned a mentor, you should begin meeting with your mentor as soon as possible to discuss the project and complete the SRP application forms.

SRP applications are due early December.

AADR applications are due January 14.

Enrollment in Dental Student Research Elective (course credits available)
All students who apply to the SRP will automatically receive 1 credit for the application process. This credit is applied in the Winter term through the course, "Dental Student Research 1: Preparing a Research Proposal."

Oral Presentations
All students who submit a completed Student Research Program application will be asked to give a 5-7 minute oral presentation before the Student Research Program Committee. No PowerPoint or other visual aids are allowed.

Review of Applications
SRP applications are reviewed by the Student Research Program Committee. When reviewing research proposals, the committee will consider scientific content, evidence of student input, clarity of research objectives, organization of proposal and presentation, the mentor and research environment, and likelihood of success. You and your mentor will be notified by the Office of Research in April regarding funding of the proposal.

American Association of Dental Research Annual Meeting in the first week of March. AADR Fellowships are announced.

SRP awards are announced.

Pre-Research Period
During this time, you are expected to have regular planning meetings with your mentor and prepare to conduct your research.

May

Orientation Meeting. Attendance is required.

Submit the SRP Agreement Form

June

Research Period
Conduct research at the School of Dentistry under your mentor's guidance full time during this period.

Attend lab meetings as requested by your mentor. 

Submit a Progress Report in mid July.

Attend the SRP Seminar Series. Seminars are one hour long and meet on Wednesdays at noon. Attendance is required for first-time SRP participants and strongly encouraged for returning participants.

Post Research Period

Present a poster at Research Day in February.

Present at AADR Annual Meeting in March. This is required for AADR fellowship recipients.

SRP Final Progress Report is due March 31 along with the SRP Evaluation. All participants are required to complete these.

Enrollment in Dental Student Research Elective (Course Credits Available)
All students who are funded by the SRP will also be automatically enrolled in the course, "Dental Student Research 2: Research and Presentation." This course is 4 credits, pass/fail. You will receive credit for this course, after successfully completing all SRP requirements at the end of the Winter term. A pass/fail grade will be assigned by your mentor in consultation with the SRP Committee Chair. To receive a passing grade, you must complete all program requirements.
