Reception
Immediately following the commencement ceremony, there will be a reception for graduates, family, and friends.  Light refreshments will be served.  It will be held at the Michigan League, 2nd Floor.  Elevators are available.

SPEAKER

 

Peter J. Polverini is Dean of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Dr. Polverini holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a DDS from Marquette University. He completed specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and was awarded the Doctor of Medical Sciences degree from Harvard University. In 1977 he was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. In 1981 he was recruited to the Department of Pathology, Northwestern University Medical and Dental Schools.

In 1992 Dr. Polverini joined the University of Michigan as a professor of dentistry and chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He was appointed chair of the Department of Oral Medicine, Pathology, and Surgery in 1995, and a year later became chair of the Department of Oral Medicine, Pathology, and Oncology. Dr. Polverini left the University of Michigan in 2000 to accept the Deanship at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. In 2003 he returned to the University of Michigan as Dean of the School of Dentistry.

Dr. Polverini has a distinguished scientific career in the field of vascular biology where he has long been a leader and influential figure. His research focuses on angiogenesis (the growth of blood vessels) and its relationship to cancer and chronic inflammatory diseases. He is the author or co-author of more than 150 scientific articles, textbooks and book chapters. He has made more than 80 scientific presentations to groups in the U.S. and overseas and is an editorial consultant for more than 30 scientific journals. He is widely recognized as an accomplished mentor, scholar, motivator and seasoned administrator who has fostered innovation in dentistry by promoting scholarship and scientific rigor.

Dr. Polverini is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, a recipient of the Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine and Pathology from the International Association for Dental Research and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. Dr. Polverini was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in 2010. Dr. Polverini will assume the Presidency of the American Association for Dental Research in March of 2013.

TICKETS  and SEATING

All are welcome to attend.  Tickets are not necessary.  Seating is on a first come, first served basis.

 

Handicapped seating is available.  East and west side entrances of the auditorium are appropriate for guest using wheelchairs.  Please refer to the diagram of Hill Auditorium to locate designated handicapped seating areas (boxes A-G on the main floor).

Parking will be free and open to the public beginning at 10:00am on Friday, May 10, 2013 in the Fletcher, Palmer, and Thayer Parking Structures.

**PLEASE NOTE**

For the Fletcher Parking Structure, use the Palmer Commons entrance (via Palmer Drive). 

The up ramp at the Fletcher Street entrance leads to patient parking.  If you park in patient parking, you will be charged $25.

Guests who are unable to reserve hotel rooms in the Ann Arbor area may wish to look for hotel rooms in Brighton, Jackson, Plymouth, Ypsilanti, or the vicinity of Detroit Metropolitan Airport.  These communities are less than one hour's drive from Ann Arbor and may have rooms available.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photographs of the graduates receiving his/her diploma will be taken during the ceremony by CALL PHOTOGRAPHY.

 

Picture proofs will be sent to the graduate at no charge shortly after the ceremony.  There is no obligation to purchase the picture, but orders can be placed at www.callphotography.com.

CAP AND GOWN

All graduates must wear the School of Dentistry academic attire to participate in the ceremony.  Graduates are responsible for ordering their own cap and gown from Willsie Cap & Gown.  The fee of $38.00 includes the rental of the gown and hood trimmed in the appropriate degree velvet as well as the one-size cap and tassel, which are yours to keep as a souvenir.  Extra dental (lilac) tassels may be ordered for $6.00 each. The school pays for the hood rental (Willsie Bills the School). No web orders accepted after 4/2/13. To order after 4/2/13, student must contact Andy Gillespie at 888-678-4723.  When filling in shipping address, use credit card billing address. 

Order by March 15, 2013 to avoid a $10 late fee

 

PLACE YOUR ORDER 
Don't forget to indicate your degree (DDS, PhD, MS) on the checkout screen.

 

The School of Dentistry's Registrar's Office will communicate to graduates the times to pick up attire.

For students receiving a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, the cost is estimated to be $27.00.  This includes the entire attire which is yours to keep. Please check back in February for updated pricing.
