Kenya Outreach - The Experience of a Lifetime for Three Dental Students

Student Organizations

There are twelve student groups and fraternities at the School of Dentistry. These groups span a breadth of interests from women in dentistry to community service. Two of our organizations, the American Student Dental Association and the Student National Dental Association feed into professional organizations – the American Dental Association (ADA) and the National Dental Association (NDA). As members of these organizations, students are able to attend professional conferences, lobby their congressional representatives in Washington and participate in community outreach.

Student Government and Politics

While in school, the dental students are represented by their classmates in the Student Council. The Student Council promotes communication between students, classes and faculty. This group hosts mixers with faculty, Dental Health Day, mouth guard clinics and assists with the interview process for new dental students.

Community Service

In addition to the outreach dental students are required to do to graudate, a number of our students participate in regular community service in the Ann Arbor area, the state of Michigan and abroad. Students use their weekends to visit health fairs and conduct dental screenings, and volunteer their time in local free clinics. During their breaks, many dental students choose to participate in mission trips abroad where they provide much needed dental care to the underserved under the supervision of faculty and practicing dentists. In recent years, students have visited Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Kenya.

Sports & Fitness

Many students participate in UM intramural sports. Currently we have a dental student volleyball team, a basketball team and a football team.
