Departmental Research

Research priorities for the divisions of the Department  of Periodontics & Oral Medicine include the following areas.

  • Periodontology and Prevention & Geriatrics -  Basic science research, clinical periodontics, and population studies with emphasis placed on translational research to bring laboratory studies into the clinical area. 
  • Oral Pathology/Medicine/Radiology -  Advanced imaging modalities; radiation biology and oncology; oral carcinogenesis; biomarkers for early detection of oral cancer.
  • Dental Hygiene - Educational research; the impact of innovative programs on student learning and satisfaction; the effect of continuing education on dental hygiene practice; peer assisted learning; the use of technology as a communication tool for case-based instruction.
