Featuring Faculty Member ... Dr. Michael Britt

Michael Britt has embarked on a long fulfilling journey in dentistry. For his undergraduate career, Michael attended Central Michigan and then came to study at the University of Michigan Dental School in 1969. He graduated in 1973 from the Dental School and went through the Periodontal Residency Program in which he received his Masters in 1976. From there, Michael set off on a rewarding career in his private practice and retired in 2007. Ever since his retirement, he has come back to the Dental School to teach two days out of the week.

As for achievements and involvements in the dental community, Michael was a member of American Academy of Periodontology, American Board of Periodontology, and the Southwest component of the Detroit District Dental Society. He has been recognized as being a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology for 25 years.

His involvement with organizations does not stop there. In his spare time, Michael considers himself an avid fly-fisherman, golfer, skier, and traveler. He is a part of the Ann Arbor chapter of Trout Unlimited. Their mission is to protect, conserve, and restore Michigan’s cold water fisheries and their watershed. With his involvement in this chapter, Michael volunteers his time to help out with their annual banquet fundraiser as well as their stream renovations that aim to prevent erosion of the banks of various streams across Michigan.

Dr. Britt photoWith his love of golf, Michael has served two three-year terms on the board of his golf club. Last year, Britt was able to almost single-handily get his golf course recognized as a National Audubon Preserve Golf Facility making it only the thirteenth golf course in Michigan with this prestigious recognition. This recognition entails that the golf course aims to protect and restore the environment as a means to support wildlife and their habitats.

When he has time to travel, Michael travels to his home in Florida or visits one of his daughters and family in Arizona and California. Many times, Britt takes one trip each year to snow ski anywhere from Michigan to Colorado. His tradition to go on a ski trip with his two daughters each year throughout their childhood is now something that he plans to continue with his two granddaughters as they get older.

Dr. Michael Britt acknowledges how his time at the University of Michigan has continued to be an illuminating experience. It is such a different environment from his private practice, and Michael enjoys the interactions with various students and faculty. Each day at the school continues to be an eye-opening experience as he is amazed at how well-trained and qualified many of the students are. Even though he is retired, he stresses how he still gets a kick out of coming to the university to work with the undergraduate and graduate dental students and offer advice to them about how they can take the knowledge they learn at the Dental School and apply it to their goals to start their own practices.
