CBCT Imaging Service - Our Practice


The University of Michigan CBCT Imaging Service is dedicated to meet the needs of referring doctors and patients.  As Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists, we use both technology and research in our approach to patient care. Our professionalism and expertise have positioned us as one of the leading CBCT Imaging Services in the State of Michigan. We offer multiple scan options, a variety of image output formats and deliver detailed reports in a timely manner.

Our Oral & Maxillofacial Radiologist

benavides photoErika Benavides, DDS, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor
Dr. Benavides is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, and serves as Chair of the Research & Technology Committee and Councilor for Communications of the ABOMR. She obtained her dental degree at the University of Valle in Cali, Colombia and completed an externship program in the Craniofacial Genetics Department at the Medical University of South Carolina. Subsequently, at the University of Missouri Kansas City and the Truman Medical Center she completed a General Practice Residency (GPR) program and also received her Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology training and a PhD in Oral Biology and Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Benavides has published multiple peer-reviewed papers on the multidisciplinary aspects of diagnostic imaging. She recently received the 2012 Charles E. English Annual Award for the most significant article in the Clinical Science and Techniques section of the Journal of Implant Dentistry. Her research interests include the integration of emerging technology to evaluate tissue properties and structure. Her faculty practice is dedicated to cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Shelby Simons, CDA, RDA
Shelby Simons is a Senior Dental Assistant in the Dental Faculty Associates Clinic. Shelby has been in the dental field for 13 years; obtaining her radiograpghy certification to take dental radiographs from the State of Michigan in 2005. She completed her associates degree in Dental Assisting from Washtenaw Community College. Her background and experience includes General Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, and Orthodontics. Shelby received specialized training for CBCT scanning at the U-M School of Dentistry.


Student Dental Clinics

In the Student Dental Clinics, treatment is provided by dental and dental hygiene students under direct faculty supervision.

Graduate Specialty Clinics

In the Graduate Specialty Clinics, you will receive treatment by residents training for a graduate degree or board certification in their specialty.

Faculty Patient Care
