New Students from Top: Eduardo Ghaname, Andres Quintero Valencia, and Stephanie Núñez

The Oral Health Sciences Ph.D. program would like to introduce its new students for 2007-2008. Joining the 12 current students are, from the top: Eduardo Ghaname, who is pursing a dual degree program for the Ph.D. in Oral Health Sciences and M.S. in Endodontics; Andres Quintero Valencia, pursuing the Ph.D. in Oral Health Sciences; and Stephanie Núñez, who is pursuing the dual D.D.S. and Ph.D. degree program in Oral Health Sciences. Eduardo Ghaname

Eduardo Ghaname received his D.D.S. from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He immigrated to Canada in 2002, where he completed an M.S. degree in Dental Materials from the University of British Columbia. In 2004, Eduardo joined the graduate program in Operative Dentistry at the University of North Carolina where he completed an M.S. degree. Eduardo's research included such diverse topics as dentist / patient relationships, the antimicrobial activity of dental materials, and correlations between laser fluorescence readings and indicators of caries extension in vitro. These activities earned him the Randolph and Ann Babcock Fellowship from the Dental Foundation of North Carolina. At the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Eduardo is pursuing a dual degree program for the Ph.D. in Oral Health Sciences and M.S. in Endodontics.

Andres Quintero Valencia

Andres Quintero Valencia was awarded the D.D.S. from the Universidad Nacional de Columbia in Bogota, Columbia, and M.S. degree in Basic Medical Sciences with a major in pharmacology from Universidad del Valle, in Cali, Columbia. Both are among the most prestigious universities in his native Columbia. While doing research on methadone tolerance, pain systems, and the medicinal qualities of native plants, he was a faculty member at the Universidad de San Martín and the Columbia School of Dentistry (Colegio Odontológico Colombiano) and started his own company, Neuroayudas, to produce didactic material for neuroscience students. In fall 2006, Andres began research with School of Dentistry faculty member, Tatiana Botero, in the Jacques Nör lab. He is now pursuing the Ph.D. in Oral Health Sciences.

Stephanie Núñez

Stephanie Núñez attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County, an honors college, where she earned a B.S. degree in Biochemistry. Stephanie's academic achievement earned her awards that included: Barry M. Goldwater Scholar, Outstanding Student in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland Alumni Association, Maryland Distinguished Scholar, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scholar. Fluent in Spanish, an accomplished bass clarinetist, and Meyerhoff Scholar, Stephanie Núñez brings diverse talents to the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, where she is pursuing the dual D.D.S. and Ph.D. degree program in Oral Health Sciences.
