One of our own faculty, Dr. Mike Behnan, Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, traveled to China this past April with his wife, Marie, by invitation from Professor Huang Li, Chairman of Orthodontics at Nanjing University, Nanjing, China.
Professor Li, one of our Postdocs from 2011, is now chairman of Orthodontics at Nanjing University. Dr. Behnan was invited to lecture and coordinate a hands-on typodont course in advanced edgewise orthodontics. The course involved precise wire prescription mechanics as taught at the Charles Tweed International Foundation for Orthodontics Research in Tucson, Arizona. The two-week Tucson Tweed course is attended annually by our residents in the fall of their second year.
To teach this course in China, Dr. Behnan assembled instructors who have taught the course in Tucson and reside near Nanjing. The four-day course began with a full day of lecture by Dr. Behnan followed by three days of intense wire bending exercises and typodont treatment of a Class I bimaxillary protrusion with extraction of four 1st premolars. The first day lecture was attended by over 125 students and orthodontists from around China. The three day wirebending and typodont course was attended by 98 students and current practitioners. They worked extremely hard and appreciated learning the philosophy and mechanics.
