The School’s Human Resources Office reports to the Sr. Associate Dean and serves as part of administration’s senior leadership team.  Working in collaboration with dean’s, directors and managers, the office provides consultation, oversight and support for all staff HR services and works collaboratively with the Sr. Associate Dean and Faculty Coordinator on academic HR services for the School of Dentistry.  A strategic objective of the School is to help facilitate and promote the recruitment of a diverse faculty and staff.  The School’s HR Service Center, which reports to the HR Director, occupies the former library space within the School, now called the Commons.  The HR Service Center is responsible for facilitating and coordinating all personnel and HR transactions for faculty, staff, temporaries, including visitors and guests.

The School’s HR operation interacts with University HR to assure compliance with University human resource policies, federal and state laws current human resource procedures, program, and best practices.  It develops and provides advice and guidance on School HR policies and procedures and resolves issue.   The HR office provides leadership and direction regarding HR strategy collaborating with management regarding short and long-range strategic objectives regarding workforce planning/talent management/organizational development and effective recruitment to build a great place to work environment for all employees.

Facilitates/coordinates:

  • The hire process for all faculty, staff, temporary & student temp appointments
  • Visa and I-9’s processing and compliance
  • Workforce administration changes (appointments/salary/funding/additional pay)
  • People Pay (non-employee)
  • Tuition Reimbursement
  • Volunteer appointments
  • Assist HR Director with organizational effectiveness initiatives
  • Assist with classification/compensation of employees
  • Coordinates the School’s New Staff Orientation/Onboarding

Human Resources Director’s Office

Facilitates/coordinates:

  • UMSD/Sr. Manager responsible for HR operations and strategy including OD/WF/TM
  • Oversight/Leadership/Direction for HR Service Center
  • Liaison with University HR and Academic HR regarding University/School compliance, policy and procedures.
  • Manage staff compensation, clarification, wage and salary administration
  • Manage staff and union relation issues and grievances
  • Consult with managers and employees on handling conflict and performance issues>
  • Lead for UMSD Affirmative Action/EEO Compliance
  • Consult/advise management regarding progressive discipline and represent the School during disciplinary review conferences
  • Develop and advise management regarding strategies and tools to effectively manage and engage the workforce:
    • Performance Management/Employee Development/Work Plans
    • Feedback
    • Customer Surveys
  • Provide leadership for the School’s Staff Forum
    • School-wide staff engagement and staff development initiatives
    • All Staff Retreat
