Polverini Elected to Institute of Medicine

Dean Peter Polverini Ann Arbor, MI — October 11, 2010 — Dr. Peter Polverini, dean of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine. Established in 1970 as the health unit of the National Academy of Sciences, IOM advises members of Congress, Congressional staff, and agency leaders on a range of important health care issues, including oral health.

The IOM provides unbiased, evidence-based, and authoritative information and advice concerning health and science policy. For those elected, membership in IOM reflects the height of professional achievement and commitment to service. Members are elected for their interest, concern, involvement and achievements in health care disciplines that affect public health as well as for their willingness to actively participate in IOM initiatives. This highly selective process recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions in advancing medicine and health care results. Each year the 1,700-member organization elects up to 65 new members and five foreign associates.
