Research Day 2009
Our Keynote Speaker, Dr. J. Silvio Gutkind (see attached file "Keynote" below), Chief of the Oral and Pharyngeal Cancer Branch, at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health, spoke on Oral Cancer and Signaling Networks: New Mechanism-Based Preventive Strategies and Targeted Therapies to a standing-room-only crowd.
Dental and dental hygiene students, graduate and Ph.D. students, and post-doctoral fellows presented summaries of their research during the poster session in the afternoon. Eighty-two posters outlining multiple areas of research were displayed in the Grand Ballroom at the Michigan League. Forty-nine faculty judges evaluated the poster presentations.
In the ballroom, a record number of exhibitors also participated. A new category of exhibitor this year was our Program Book sponsor, generously funded by Procter & Gamble Professional Oral Health (see attached "Book Cover" below). Students, faculty and staff enthusiastically participated in the poster session and exhibitions for an afternoon of science.
Fourteen awards were made to DDS, DH, MS, Ph.D. and post doctoral students for their research presentations. See the full list of award winners. William Love was awarded grand prize for his research on G-CSF/Bcl-2 signaling in head and neck tumor angiogenesis, in the laboratory of Dr. Jacques Nör. As Grand Prize winner, Love, who is also a Student Research Program Participant, will represent the School of Dentistry at the ADA/Dentsply Student Clinician Research Program in Honolulu, Hawaii, in October.
