Profile for Success (PFS)

The University of Michigan School of Dentistry and the University of Michigan School of Medicine uphold their mission to “foster and exemplify equity, diversity, and multicultural value” through the continued effort to contribute to the diversity of the health professions workforce. This summer we will host a six week residential summer program. PFS is designed to expose undergraduates from disadvantaged backgrounds to careers in dentistry and ultimately make them a more competitive applicant to professional school.

PFS prepares undergraduates who are on track to enter dental school the academic year following their participation. Preparation for the DAT/MCAT is the main focus of this program and participants spend 80% of their time in preparation classes or facilitated study groups. Emphasis is placed on dental research, careers in dental education, and in-depth exposure to dental career specialties.

The primary objective of PFS is to prepare junior and senior level students for success on the DAT/MCAT, and increase their understanding of the career opportunities in dentistry. Participants must meet the following minimum criteria:

All program participants are exposed to many aspects of health careers with a focus on dentistry and medicine. Each participant is assigned a dental/medical student mentor, and there are formal and informal opportunities for participants to interact with faculty and staff. Admissions procedures workshops are held to provide exposure to dental school requirements. PFS participants have the opportunity to observe chairside in the clinical setting, and simulate clinical practice during activities such as: cavity preparation, taking impressions, waxing tooth models, and exposing and processing radiographs.
