Information Protection Services

Information stored on Dental Informatics servers is secure and protected against corruption and theft. The servers also adhere to strict privacy for patient, personal, and research information. However, information stored on individual workstations, whether desktop or portable, is vulnerable to hard drive crashes, viruses, and theft of the device. Wise users understand that the best protection against the loss of the valuable information is storing it in a secure environment and backing it up often.

Schedule and Availability:

This service is designed to be available 24 hours a day, every day. If server upgrades or other scheduled maintenance is necessary, an advance email notification will be sent to inform all users. Maintenance will be scheduled when it is least consequential to users.

Backup of information is performed at the end of every business day. Upon request, we will restore files lost within the previous three weeks within 24 hours, and files lost prior to the previous three weeks within 48 hours.

Our Technology Services Staff are available Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 6:00pm.

Policy-related questions and reports of violations can be sent by e-mail to abuse@umich.edu or called in to the consultants at 764-HELP (764-4357). Urgent computer-related crimes that pose a threat to personal safety should be reported immediately to the U-M Department of Public Safety and Security by calling 911 from an on-campus phone ( or 763-1131 from off-campus).
