Network Upgrade
The School's networking needs have outgrown our current network. A leading dental institution requires a reliable wired and wireless network that supports a myriad of educational, research, patient care and administrative functions. The school's current network is a patchwork of fast and slow connections, some wired and some wireless, none of which operates at optimal speeds. The current network does not fully support applications like digital imaging and available axiUm modules that would improve our productivity.
We want our network to be able to:
- provide one gigabyte for every computer/device
- be highly available, reliable and scalable
- be a sustainable business model
- meet emerging yet currently unidentified needs
- meet HIPAA, FERPA, U-M and national security and compliance regulations.
The preliminary timeline is:
Year One
- get input from SoD community
- develop project plan, including technical specifications
- develop communication plan
- develop evaluation plan
- develop maintenance plan
- develop a sustainable funding model
Year Two
- improve our core system and move out from there floor by floor
- done on a room by room basis, managed by coordinating with departments
- two day process: first day replace conduit, second day wiring, back-up and working
