Logos, Wordmarks, and Writing Standards

  • These standards apply to all print and electronic media related to the School of Dentistry including brochures, pamphlets, announcements, invitations, advertisements, and promotional, recruiting, and marketing materials.
     
  • These standards also apply to any item that includes a U-M or School of Dentistry logo or wordmark.
     
  • Departments, units, or programs receiving any School of Dentistry funds, regardless of source, are bound by these standards.



WRITING STANDARDS

Style Guide:  The School of Dentistry uses the Associated Press Stylebook as the primary resource guide for grammar, punctuation and principles and practices of writing and reporting. Use this style guide for all written material.

Editorial Standards:  These standards apply to all written content including but not limited to brochures, promotional and recruiting materials, reports, newsletters, news releases, the DentalUM, and Web sites.

IDENTITY STANDARDS

These standards apply to images, logos, wordmarks, and the seal. Direct all questions related to the use of these items to the Director of Communications at dentistrylogos@umich.edu.

The University has clearly articulated policies for use of images, logos, wordmarks, and the seal bearing the University name.  These policies must be adhered to for use in all print and electronic media, and other promotional materials (mugs, T-Shirts, scrubs, etc.).  The U-M Identity Standards outline policies and graphic standards related to using the U-M brand.

The School of Dentistry also has standards for use of the logos and wordmarks bearing the name of the School.  These standards must be adhered to for use in all print and electronic media, and other promotional (mugs, T-Shirts, scrubs, etc.).

The School of Dentistry also has standards that apply to promotional and marketing materials including: brochures, pamphlets, announcements, invitations, and any promotional, recruiting, or marketing material related to the School of Dentistry. These standards must be adhered to for all print and electronic media.

U-M IDENTITY STANDARDS

Standards for use of the University of Michigan logos, wordmarks and seal

University marks are registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. For details on the use of the University name, image, and marks; licensing guidelines; information about advertising, sponsorships, and fundraising go to the U-M Identity Guidelines Web site. Actual images and color and usage guidelines are found in the Graphics Standards section of the site.

Wordmark and Block M Guidelines

Do not:

  • alter the mark in any way.
  • use any part of the mark, including the Block M, as part of another word.
  • replace the word “Michigan” in the Split Block M with any other word.
  • redesign, redraw, animate, modify, distort, or alter the proportions of the mark.
  • surround the mark with—or place in the foreground over—a pattern or design.
  • rotate or render the mark three-dimensionally.
  • add words, images, or any other new elements to the mark.
  • replace the approved typeface with any other typeface.
  • enclose the mark in a shape or combine it with other design elements or effects.
  • modify the size or position relationship of any element within the mark.
  • add additional copy to the mark.

University Seal

The Seal is reserved for regental and presidential purposes.

SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY IDENTITY STANDARDS

Standards for use of the School of Dentistry logos, wordmarks and seal.

Departments, units, or programs receiving any School of Dentistry funds, regardless of source, are bound by these standards.  These standards include, but are not limited to:  letterhead and other stationery items, business cards, departmental and program logos, brochures, programs and promotional and recruitment materials, reports, newsletters, advertisements, news releases, the DentalUM, and Web sites.

New Materials

  • The School of Dentistry must be clearly identified on the exterior of any publication—brochures, flyers, promotional and recruitment materials, newsletters, reports, Web pages, and the DentalUM.
  • Logos, wordmarks, and images must be approved prior to use.
  • A draft of new material must be submitted to the Director of Communications for approval.

Stationery and Business Cards

Use the School of Dentistry wordmark on stationery and business cards.

Unique Identifiers, Graphics and Logos (Department, unit or program logos)

  • Departments, units, or School of Dentistry organizations who wish to include a unique identifier, graphic or logo as part of their visual presence should work with the Director of Communications to insure that the graphic complies with the School of Dentistry standards. Submit designs to  dentistrylogos@umich.edu.
  • The development and design is the responsibility of the unit or individual.  Materials must be in compliance with School of Dentistry Identity Guidelines.  See Get Approval.
  • Student Projects: Student groups must follow these standards and must submit materials to the Assistant Dean for Student Services and the Director of Communications for approval.

Fundraising

  1. All fundraisuing projects must be pre-approved.
  2. All groups must use a U-M licensed vendor.  Approved Vendors.
  3. Student groups should submit proposals to the Assistant Dean for Student Services. See Policy for Student Use of Logos and Wordmarks.
  4. The use of the University of Michigan and/or School of Dentistry wordmarks and logos must be approved by the Director of Communications.
  5. The target audience for the fundraising must be specified. See below:

External Audiences: items to be sold/distributed to any consumer (parents, family, friends, patients, students, staff, faculty or the general public.). These are items that have a broad circulation and would be worn/used by anyone, both inside and outside of the School of Dentistry. If the audience is external to the University, the wordmark used must be one that includes University of Michigan and School of Dentistry. The registered mark ® must appear with the Block M.

Internal Audiences: Items to be sold/distributed to School of Dentistry personnel only (students, staff, faculty).  Most likely these items would not be used/worn outside the School of Dentistry. The registered mark ® must appear with the Block M.

 


Getting Approval
Proposals will be reviewed by the School of Dentistry Marketing Group. Please allow 10 business days for review and comment.

Development and design is the responsibility of the unit or individual.  Wordmarks, logos and other graphics must be in compliance with School of Dentistry Identity Standards. If you have questions, contact the Director of Communications who will assist you and guide you through the process.

  • Before re-printing or re-issuing an existing brochure, flyer, advertisement, promotional or recruitment piece, newsletter, reports etc., submit the piece to dentistrylogos@umich.edu for review.
