Creating a Positive Learning Environment

Faculty members are among the key gatekeepers who come into contact with students who are distressed, and yet they may feel unprepared to handle such situations. It can be difficult to know when to take action regarding students' wellbeing and what exactly to do to help distressed students get the help they need. It can also be difficult to know where the line is between helping and being intrusive. In this presentation, Patty Mullally, LMSW, MA, of the Wellness and Counseling Psychology Center, will address these issues, as well as other concerns regarding faculty-student interactions around students' emotional wellbeing. She will explain how to recognize when students would benefit from professional help, and will teach faculty how to motivate students to get help and how to make referrals effectively.
