TECHNOLOGY OWNERSHIP
As long as you remain within the School of Dentistry, these tools are yours to use as you see fit. You can add any apps that you like while the iPad is in your possession.
You also have AppleCare+, so if you have an accident, you only need pay a small charge for repair or replacement.
Your iPad is managed by the School of Dentistry. This means that they pre-installed a few apps and have the ability to install new apps in the future. Other than that, however, the School has no more control over the device. They cannot track its usage, collect data, or violate any other kind of hardware or software privacy.
GET HELP
If you need help using your iPad, keyboard, Apple Pencil, or any of the pre-installed School of Dentistry supported apps, please reach out to our help center:
If you are having problems with your AppleID and/or damage to your equipment, you will need to reach out directly to Apple: getsupport.apple.com.
Your iPad, Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard include three years of AppleCare+ coverage for both manufacturer defects and accidental damage. When AppleCare+ is needed to fully replace or extensively repair an item, you will be responsible for a repair or replacement cost ($49 for an iPad, $29 for a pencil or keyboard). AppleCare+ covers two catastrophic breaks over the course of three years.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
STUDENT FAQ
AppleCare+ provides two covered incidents per year. In the event of damage, you are encouraged to work directly with AppleCare+ for repairs. Depending on the issues, there may be a cost that you would be responsible for. The maximum fee is $49 for damage to the iPad and $29 for damage to the pencil.
If you are a current D1, D2, D3, or DH student, you should have already received your device.
You will need to make that decision based upon what you consider your own technology needs. The Apple Pencil and the keyboard add quite a bit of functionality to the iPad, but some activities like using a Remote Desktop may require a traditional operating system and mouse input. UM does provide services for buying personal hardware and software, potentially at a discounted price.
No. You either accept the iPad or you don’t.
The iPad you receive from the School of Dentistry will have some specific apps for productivity and security. You can use another device if you prefer, though you may encounter some work that was optimized for iPad use.
Yes. You may use it as you choose as if it were your personal device.
Some resources are linked on this page. Check out the iPad 101 Canvas site.
The devices are owned by the School of Dentistry while you are enrolled with the school. You will have the option to purchase the device at a depreciated value when you graduate.
If you leave before graduating, you may need to return the equipment or pay its depreciated value if you wish to keep it.
For the most part, yes. We will manage these devices with a Mobile Device Management system (Jamf), which will require a strong passcode but will allow you to customize most settings. This system will only be used to add/update a few suggested apps and iPad OS to make sure everyone is on the same version of software.
You are encouraged to use the iPad as if it were your own, so nothing from the Apple App store is off limits. You are only asked not to try to jailbreak your iPad or otherwise try to remove the management system that the School of Dentistry has added.
The School of Dentistry cannot and will not be tracking usage data on this equipment. Data may be tracked by wifi networks and internet service providers you use.
