Program Structure

The graduate dental hygiene program is a 36 credit hour program. Independent research leading to the completion of a publishable thesis is required. A Master of Science degree in Dental Hygiene is awarded by the University of Michigan, Horace A. Rackham Graduate School at the completion of all requirements.

The program consists of required and elective courses in both dental science and cross major elective areas. Depending on the specific course, students have some discretion in the placement of the course in the academic program. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students participate in clinical research activities and clinical and didactic teaching.

The graduate program is designed as a full time, two year program. Students may work with the graduate program director to design a part time program to accommodate finances, time and family schedules. The graduate dental hygiene faculty is committed to assisting students with the development and implementation of a program which will best suit their professional needs.

Program Focus

The Graduate Dental Hygiene Program offers two tracks for graduate students, the educational focus and the clinical research focus. While many of the courses overlap students, each focus has a specific group of course offerings. Graduate students may also investigate a number of dual enrollment opportunities within the University.
