Research Interests
1) Rap1 studies. We have investigated the role of rap1, a small GTP-binding protein in development and progression of head and neck cancer. We are continuing these studies with a recently funded R01 grant (NIH funded) that focuses on the role of rap1 in integrating the loss of cell adhesion with cell invasion and migration in keratinocytes.
2) Early Detection studies. Head and neck cancer has a 5 year survival rate of less than 50%, primarily due to late detection. In a collaborative project with Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan, Professor of Pathology, we are profiling the immune response to head and neck cancer with the notion that these antibodies will form the basis of a serum-based early detection assay for head and neck cancer. We recently received and R21 grant (NIH funded) to continue these studies.
3) Biomarkers for treatment selection. Our exploratory studies in the early detection project, revealed possible biomarkers for prediction of treatment response in head and neck cancer. We have applied for internal funding to generate more preliminary data and plan to submit an R01 grant application in June 2009.
