The Graduate Orthodontics program at the University of Michigan is 34-month in length for an M.S. degree, or a 60+ months for combined training in Orthodontics with a PhD in Oral Health Sciences.I. General Information
A. Domestic Applicants (USA, Canadian and Territorial)
The Graduate Program in Orthodontics requires participation in the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program and the American Dental Education Association’s (ADEA) Post-doctoral Application Support Service (PASS). Applications and credentials of those who are interested in Orthodontics must be received by PASS no later than September 2, 2005.
Our program also participates in the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program. Prior to filing your application, please contact the National Matching Service to obtain your individual Postdoctoral Dental Match Code. The institution code for our orthodontics program that you will use in your application is 6634.

The completed application and application fee of $60.00 should be returned to the Rackham Graduate School no later than September 1, preceding the fall term in which you wish to begin study. B. International Applicants
In addition to the requirements for U.S. applicants stated above, international students must submit official academic records bearing the signature of the registrar or another academic official and either a raised or ink stamp of the issuing institution. Records must be issued in the original language and be accompanied by certified English translations.
International students are required to take a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test. The exam score must be current (less than 2 years old). When registering for the exam, please indicate the University of Michigan (institute #2325) as a score recipient. The TOEFL test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and you should take the test no later than August to ensure that your score arrives by the application deadline. The minimum accepted score for the TOEFL is 560 for the written test and 220 for the computer-based test.

International students must submit a financial certification as part of the Rackham Graduate School application. A completed financial Certificate outlining financial support available to you, along with original evidence to support the amounts indicated (bank statements, scholarship letters, etc.), must be submitted along with your application for admission.

Application through the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies is also required for all applicants. The current application fee of $75 must be submitted in U.S. funds or international money order. This fee cannot be waived. Applications that arrive without the required fee will remain on file and unprocessed, pending receipt of the fee. The Graduate School will notify you that your application was received only after the fee has been paid and the application has been processed.

C. Orthodontics / PhD Applicants
The doctor of philosophy (PhD) in Oral Health Sciences (OHS) is a program of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies offered through the School of Dentistry. The primary objective of this program is to train exceptional students to become leaders in academic research in oral health sciences.
The major areas of study include: craniofacial development & anomalies; tissue engineering & regeneration; oral infectious diseases & immunity; mineralized tissue & musculoskeletal disorders; oral-facial sensory & motor functions; and oral & pharyngeal carcinogenesis.
This program is most appropriate for advanced students who hope to eventually join the faculty of a major research institution or dental school.
The combined M.S. in Orthodontics and Ph.D. in Oral Health Sciences (OHS) is a dual degree program. Application and acceptance into both programs is required. Please refer to Section IA and B. In the Rackham application section “program of application” applicant should indicate Orthodontics M.S. (00365) and Oral Health Sciences Ph.D. (00360) in the subplan.
In addition to the submission of the current academic transcript, GRE scores and TOEFL scores for international applicants that are submitted for the orthodontics application, the application for the OHS PhD program requires the submission of:
- a strong statement of interest and rationale for pursuing this dual degree program
- Three letters of reference addressing research potential
Funding for students in the dual degree program will be derived from both the OHS and Orthodontics programs.
Application deadline for the OHS Ph.D. Program component for dual degree applicants is October 1. Please note that the application for the orthodontics component of the combined program should be submitted by the deadline stipulated above in section I.

The expected tuition for 2005-2006, orthodontics graduate student that is a Michigan resident is approximately $12,000.00 for the first year, $15,000 for the second year and $11,000 for the third year. For non-residents, the expected tuition will be approximately $21,000.00 for the first year, $ 27,500 for the second year and $ 20,000 for the third year. Tuition and fees are subject to change without notice.
The program covers partial travel expenses to select professional meetings through the three years of the program provided that adequate funds are available.
In addition to tuition, there is an $80.00 per term registration fee, a $1.50 per term school/college government fee, a $6.69 per term Michigan Student Assembly fee, and a $5.50 per term student legal services fee. Fees are payable prior to registration, at registration, or in installments during the term. The number and dates of the installments will be specified in advance of each term.
All students, except those whose sponsors insure them or whose parents insure them and live in the United States or Canada, are required to purchase Student Group Health Insurance. Two basic plans are available. The annual premium depends upon the plan selected and the number of individuals covered. For additional information, contact the Michigan Student Assembly.

IV. Post-Doctoral Scholars Program for Foreign Trained Orthodontists
The Postdoctoral Scholars Program is a flexible program, which is designed to meet the needs of international students having a B.D.S., D.D.S., or D.M.D. and an orthodontics specialty education from an FDA accredited dental school, that wish to receive advanced non-degree training in the field of Orthodontics.
