postdoctoral scholar program
The Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences, Division of Prosthodontics, through the Office of Alumni Relations and Continuing Dental Education, offers opportunities to study Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry at a postgraduate level. This program offers a number of graduate courses that dentists may take to enhance their knowledge and skills in the area of Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry. Although this program does not lead to a post-graduate degree in Prosthodontics, it provides an exceptional academic exposure and experience. This experience is organized to meet the needs of dentists seeking to broaden their knowledge and skills in the area of Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry, but who are not seeking a graduate degree (such as Master of Science).

This program offers a selection of courses in complete denture prosthodontics, fixed and removable partial denture prosthodontics, implant prosthodontics, and esthetics in prosthodontics. However, the major thrust of this program focuses on gaining in-depth knowledge in the areas of implant dentistry.

Evidence-based dentistry is now essential to treat dental patients. Today there are more than 29 different implant systems available in North America. The implant component of this program will analyze articles related to dental implants and apply them to practice. Two different implant prosthodontic hands-on learning experiences will be presented. One is a single restoration case with an implant, and the second is an implant-supported overdenture. This hands-on training course has uniquely designed partially and completely edentulous typodonts that will simulate real situations in patients' mouths. Unlike company-introduced training courses, each participant will be able to learn most of the laboratory work, not by observing ready-made prosthesis. This component of the program will also explore some aspects of conventional prosthodontic procedures.

The esthetic component of the program is in the area of fixed prosthodontics. This part of the program will provide participants with basic knowledge regarding esthetic aspects of modern prosthodontic treatment. The aim of this area of the program is to create an awareness of the aspects that make a functional restoration also an esthetically pleasing restoration. Participants will become familiar with the knowledge and techniques to create an environment that is characterized by the absence of dental and periodontal diseases.

To satisfactorily accomplish the learning outcomes of this program, it is essential that participants spend three consecutive terms starting in August of the academic year. At the completion of the program, a "Certificate of Completion" will be awarded. Tuition per each term, as of 2001, is approximately $8,000.

To be considered for acceptance into this program, the following documentation must be submitted to the Office of Alumni Relations and Continuing Dental Education:
  • A letter of intent indicating your desire to pursue post-graduate training in prosthodontics, the date you wish to begin your program, (the program begins in August of each year)
  • A copy of your diploma (dental)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Verification of English language skills (if English is not your native language); minimum TOEFL score for admission is 560
  • Application for admission
