Dr. Gerstner's research focuses on the ultimate and proximate mechanisms of oral motor behaviors. Proximate causality studies focus on electrophysiological stimulation and recording methods to understand the role of the basal ganlia in the control or oral motor behavior initiation and maintenance. Ultimate causality studies focus on the interaction between form and function, cross-species comparisons, and the dynamics of natural behavior patterns.
