Mary Layher Receives ADHA's Top Honor

Mary Layher, a senior research lab specialist in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, has been nominated by the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) to receive the organization's top award for outstanding achievement that affects the dental hygiene profession.

Layher received the 2008 Johnson & Johnson/ADHA Excellence in Dental Hygiene Award during the ADHA's annual session in Albuquerque, New Mexico. To be nominated, recipients must have been ADHA members for at least 10 years, be active in the association, and must be nominated by a colleague.

Sigma Phi Alpha Inducts Four

The local chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha, the national dental hygiene honorary society, inducted four new members this spring. Inducted were dental hygiene students Courtnay Green, Kelly Wagner, and Kristen Hubbs. Sue Garbarini (DH 1953) was inducted as an honorary member and recognized for her contributions to the advancement of the dental hygiene profession.

 

Gwozdek Receives AHDA Student Advisor Award

Anne Gwozdek received the American Dental Hygienists' Association Student Advisor Award at the ADHA's annual session in June 2008. The award honors student advisors who exhibit excellence and dedication in encouraging student involvement in dental hygiene.

ADHA is the nation's largest organization representing the professional interests of more than 120,000 dental hygienists. 

Gwozdek, a dental hygiene faculty member and advisor to the Student American Dental Hygienists' Association, earned a certificate in dental hygiene from U-M in 1973.
