Scholars Program in Dental Leadership (SPDL)
The Scholars Program in Dental Leadership (SPDL) was established to promote leadership skills and to provide students with an opportunity to exercise those skills. This non-credit program targets pre-doctoral dental and dental hygiene students. The program centers on core leadership skills. Participants develop an understanding of the interplay between leadership and the challenges that leaders face, as they develop opportunities through a set of leadership competencies. In addition, a leadership focus in dentistry is defined by the participants themselves, whether it is public health, policy changes, dental research, business or academic dentistry. The program is intended to capitalize on human potential by developing a leadership mindset through activities such as coaching and counseling for maximal performance, fostering the power of working together, and managing change. Applications for the program are taken once per year and can be found online at the SPDL Web pages.
