The program provides advanced clinical training and patient management experiences.

• Residents gain much more detailed knowledge in periodontics, endodontics, occlusion and implantology.
• They will treat patients with advanced stages of oral disease and/or compromised health.
• They obtain a working knowledge of scientific methodology.
• They gain a foundation for evidence based dentistry.
• They develop teaching skills and participate in a teaching role under the mentorship of experienced faculty.

 
The first year establishes the basis for sound treatment decision-making and clinical practice. The second year provides advanced clinical experience in restorative procedures, an introduction to research design and methodology and a teaching experience at the pre-doctoral level. The third year involves additional clinical practice plus a mentored research experience to meet a thesis requirement that can be submitted for publication in the dental literature.
 
Successful graduate are well-qualified for positions as full-time clinical faculty in a dental school as an educator or administrator in both pre-doctoral comprehensive care and graduate general dentistry programs.
 
Students completing the academic, clinical and research requirements receive both a:

• Master of Science degree from the Rackham Graduate School
• Certificate of program completion from the Dental School.
