Upcoming speakers

Michigan Clinical Research Symposium, Inaugural Symposium 2008

Clinical Research to Clinical Practice:

Managing Challenges at the Cutting Edge
September Thursday 11 - Saturday 13, 2008

The focus of the inaugural symposium for the Michigan Clinical Research Symposium series is the transition of clinical research to clinical practice. What are the innovations in dental medicine at the cutting edge currently? What are thought leaders doing behind the scenes to advance evidence-based dentistry methods and materials? What breakthroughs in the way dentistry is practiced are anticipated around the bend? How will innovations be translated from the laboratory to the clinical research arena to the dental practice? Most importantly, what will innovations mean to practicing clinicians and the future of dentistry?

The questions posed above are just a few issues to be addressed in this symposium. Several sub-topics will be covered, including dental/facial esthetics, oral systemic health, tissue engineering/regeneration, cancer, and genetics.

This meeting will be co-sponsored by Delta Dental and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. It is an ideal amalgamation of clinical and patient-oriented research with a focus on the future of what is to come in the oral health field. Dental continuing education credit will be provided, and it will be an excellent opportunity for those in various walks of oral health care, including academicians and private practitioners. Students in the graduate and undergraduate training programs in clinical research and specialty training will also be invited to provide poster presentations as a part of a pre-symposium. The pre-symposium will also include brief presentations by experts in various specialty oral health areas.

The following speakers have been tentatively scheduled:

  • David Sackett, OC, MD, ScD, MSc Epid, Trout Research and Education Center at Irish Lake

  • Hal Slavkin, DDS, University of Southern California

  • Robert Nerem, BS, MSc, PhD, Georgia Institute of Technology

  • Kenneth Malament, DDS MScD, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine

  • Robert Genco, DDS, PhD, SUNY Buffalo

  • David Wong, BSc, DMD, DMSc, UCLA School of Dentistry

  • Bob Kerbel, BA, PhD, Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre

Clinical Research Professionals Group

It is an exciting time of innovation and change for research faculty and staff involved in translational and patient-oriented research at the School of Dentistry.  The Clinical Research Professionals Focus Group was established in March of this year.  The group has brought those of different disciplines together, and encouraged education and training in clinical research.

The Clinical Research Professionals Focus Group is an inclusive collective, one that encourages participation from all departments in the School of Dentistry.  The group meets on a monthly basis for a luncheon and participation in discussion sessions, training and education programs, and workshops.
