Peter X Ma is the Richard H Kingery Endowed Collegiate Professor. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Polymer Chemistry and Polymer Materials from Tsinghua University in Beijing. He received his Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from Rutgers University, and then took a post-doctoral position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School. In 1996, he began his career at the University of Michigan. He is a tenured full professor with quadruple appointments in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences in the School of Dentistry, in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Macromolecular Science and Engineering Center, Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering.
Professor Ma won the IADR Isaac Schour Memorial Award and a Clemson Award from the Society for Biomaterials in 2013. He has published 193 articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings and books, and edited a book titled Scaffolding in Tissue Engineering (CRC Press). He has also published 184 abstracts/presentations at professional conferences. He has been an invited/keynote speaker for 177 times at conferences and institutions, such as Gordon Conferences, Society for Biomaterials, the American Chemical Society, Canadian Conference on Chemistry, Asian Symposium on Biomedical Materials, International Symposium on Molecular Nanotechnology (Japan), Forum for Innovative Therapies (Germany), The Korean Society of Bone Metabolism, MEDTEC (Ireland), ICMAT (Singapore), THERMEC, ASAIO, PACIFICHEM, IEEE-EMBS, TMS, ASME, CORS (China) and so forth. He won a Whitaker Foundation Biomedical Engineering Young Investigator Awardand a DuPont Young Professor award. He is named one of the Top 100 materials scientists in the world (2000-2010) by Thomson Reuters. He was elected to Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) in 2006, and was elected to Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE), International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering in 2012. He reviews grant proposals for NIH, NSF, DOD, NSERC (Canada), Canada Foundation for Innovation, European Commission, Wellcome Trust Grants (UK), Austrian Science Fund, Swiss NSF, Dutch Technology Foundation, Israel Science Foundation, Singapore Science & Engineering Council, Singapore National Medical Research Council, Singapore National Research Foundation, Hong Kong UGC, Hong Kong RGC, NSF of China, US Civilian Research & Development Foundation, ACS Petroleum Research Fund, MIT Sea Grant College Program etc. He serves as a reviewer for 70 scientific journals, including Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering, Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Journal of Controlled Release, Journal of Biomaterials Science – Polymer Edition, Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews, Biomedical Materials: Materials for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Langmuir, Macromolecules, Polymer, Journal of Applied Polymer Science, and Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, etc.
