Recording a formal video using your webcam is no easy task. There are many things to consider before making your big debut! Follow the quick guide (below) to ensure you look good and that your message is not only heard but also remembered (for the right reasons)!

CLOTHES

Keep your clothes simple, solid, and non-striped!

  • It’s not a fashion show, we know you look good! Avoid fancy clothes and anything that’s bedazzled
  • Solid colors are a solid choice (because they are less distracting)
  • Avoid stripes at all costs! They make waves (literal and figurative)

FRAMING

The rule of thirds is not for the birds.

  • Your adoring fans want to see your best ⅓ (shoulders and up)
  • Leave some breathing room on the sides and top of the screen, don’t be this guy
  • Don’t forget to smile while you look into the camera and dispense your wisdom (saying cheese is totally optional!)

BACKGROUND

A background is like a supporting actor/actress, they need to make you look good, not steal the show!

LIGHTING

Look into the light, but don’t get in front of it!

  • Large windows behind you can create a blinding light and/or make you a silhouette
  • Trying dusting off that old lamp you’ve been meaning to sell at the garage sale and put it in front of you!
  • Turn off overhead lighting, it can create “shiny” spots (but don’t worry, make-up can help with that too!)

MICROPHONE

Your earbuds are your buds.

  • If you don’t have earbuds, borrow them from your hip children, or friend's children (they’ll likely have a spare pair)
  • Lock your dogs and children up (figuratively speaking of course)
  • Shut the front door (keep the ambient noise out)
