We hope this letter finds you well, with the promise of a happy and summer!

This spring we held our annual Senior Luncheon on April 14^th, 2012.  The luncheon honors all of the Senior Dental Hygiene students.  It is an opportunity for them to mingle with faculty, alumni, the current Dental Hygiene Alumni Board members, and Washtenaw District Dental Hygienists’ Society members.  The day was beautiful and everyone there enjoyed a delicious catered lunch.  The luncheon could not have happened without the generous support of faculty, alumni and the members of Washtenaw District.  Thank you for all of your help! 

An awards ceremony took place for the seniors. 
These are the awards presented and their recipients:

Pauline F. Steele Student Leadership Award
This award was established by the U of M Dental Hygiene Alumni Association in 1968.  It is named after Pauline Steele, who was the second director of Dental Hygiene and served in that position from 1968-1988.  Miss Steele was a nationally recognized leader in dental hygiene.  This award recognizes a senior dental hygiene student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities while a dental hygiene student. 

Recipient: Elizabeth Easter

Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals S.T.A.R. Award
This award is sponsored by the Colgate Oral Pharmaceutical company and recognizes the “stars” among senior dental hygiene students across the United States.  STAR stands for Student Total Achievement Recognition, and the characteristics of the student recipient include:

• True dedication to the dental hygiene profession
• Compassion in patient care
• Enthusiasm for community service
• Enjoys the role of dental hygienist

Recipient: Ashley Copus

Hu-Friedy Outstanding Student - Golden Scaler Award
This award is presented to the student who exemplifies the dental hygienists role of clinician in all aspects of clinical care.  The student must demonstrate outstanding skills in patient assessment, analytical abilities in developing a dental hygiene diagnosis and treatment plan; and the ability to carry out the educational, therapeutic and preventative aspects of dental hygiene care.  In essence, this individual must have the ability to develop an effective relationship with the patient, identify the patient’s needs and effectively complete the appropriate care.  In addition, the student must be able to integrate dental hygiene care into comprehensive oral care, serving as a facilitator and advocate for the patient. 

Recipient: Felecia Billings

Washtenaw Dental Hygienists’ Society Professional Involvement Award
This award is given to the student who demonstrates commitment to professional development through participation in professional activities and/or community service.  Membership in SADHA is preferred. 

Recipient: Kyle Katynski

American Association of Public Health Dentistry
Dental Hygiene Student Merit Award for Outstanding Achievement in Community Dentistry.

Recipients: Ashley Copus & Julia Johnson

E-Learning Recipient: Debbie Kerr

Sigma Phi Alpha
This is the dental hygiene honor society.  Students are inducted in the spring of the senior year.

Johnson and Johnson Professional Excellence in Dental Hygiene Award

Recipient: Mona Riaz    

Numerous students were presented with Three-Year certificates from SADHA.

Wendy Kerschbaum presented three students with red Ginsberg Center Service Cords which they wore at graduation.

Outstanding Dental Hygiene Alumni

Each year, the DHAA board selects one Outstanding Dental Hygiene Alumni.  This recipient is a graduate of the University of Michigan and has been practicing for at least thirty years.  Each winner has given exemplary service to the profession of Dental Hygiene.  This year, we would like to congratulate Mary Gilson Layher on her achievements and contributions to our profession.  Thank you, Mary!

Congratulations to all the award winners and recent graduates!  We wish you continued success in our wonderful profession!

We sincerely thank you for your generous support!  Your dollars enable us to preserve the excellence that we have come to expect from the University of Michigan Dental Hygiene Program!  Your dues help us to host activities, such as the senior luncheon, present gifts and awards, share in Homecoming activities, and also provide financial support for students in need.  Without your continued support, these things would not be possible.

We would like to remind/inform you of the annual dues for July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013.  You may pay your $15.00 dues annually or you may choose to have a Lifetime Membership at the one time cost of $150.00.

Please print and enclose it with your check.  Be sure to include your address, current email and graduation year as this will assist us in recording your payment.  Feel free to write down a few lines to let us know what you have been doing professionally and personally!  If you would like to nominate someone for the Outstanding Alumni/ae award that is presented annually, please send us his/her name, years in practice (must be at least 30 years in practice) and a copy of their resume for our consideration.
