Dr. William Giannobile Named Director of Clinical Research
Ann Arbor, MI July 25, 2003 The dean of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Dr. Peter Polverini, today announced that Dr. William Giannobile has been named to the new position of director of clinical research.
“Will’s appointment to this new position reflects his stellar reputation as a scientist and educator,” Polverini said. “During his career, he has established solid professional and personal bonds with scientists and academicians throughout the clinical research community that will enable our School to establish and sustain a broad-based, competitive clinical research program.” Giannobile, an associate professor of dentistry in the Department of Periodontics, Prevention, and Geriatrics, will work with a clinical research center steering committee to define the center’s current and future programs. Polverini said he envisions the center serving as “a new opportunity to provide patient care, capitalizing on our existing strengths in basic and translational research and applying them in a patient centered environment.” Earlier this year, Giannobile became the first School of Dentistry faculty member to receive U-M’s prestigious Henry Russel Award for his outstanding record of teaching and research. Last year he received the Anthony Rizzo Periodontal Research Award, and both this year and last year received the R. Earl Robinson Regeneration Award for a peer-reviewed paper that contributed the most to the knowledge of periodontal regeneration. In addition to his teaching and research responsibilities, Giannobile belongs to numerous professional and research societies, serves on the executive council of the Midwest Society of Periodontology, is an associate editor of the Journal of Periodontology, has served on numerous School committees, and has been an advisor to dental and graduate students. The University of Michigan School of Dentistry is one of the nation’s leading dental schools engaged in oral health care education, research, patient care, and community service. General dental care clinics and specialty clinics providing advanced treatment enable the School to offer dental services and programs to patients throughout Michigan. Classroom and clinic instruction prepare future dentists, dental specialists, and dental hygienists for practice in private offices, hospitals, academia, and public agencies. Research seeks to discover and apply new knowledge that can help patients worldwide.
