Ann Arbor, MI October 2, 2003 Dr. David Mooney, a professor in the School of Dentistrys Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences, is one of five individuals who received the University of Michigans Distinguished Faculty Recognition Award last evening. The award was presented to Mooney and others at a dinner at the residence of U-M President Mary Sue Coleman.
The award, for the 2002-2003 academic year, honors Mooney for his outstanding contributions as a teacher, scholar, and mentor. The award carries a $1,000 stipend.
Mooney, who has been with the School of Dentistry since 1994, is also a professor of chemical and biomedical engineering at the College of Engineering. He is one of the worlds leading researchers in tissue engineering and biomaterials.
In addition to securing more than $15 million in research funding, he also holds more than 10 patents, several of which have been licensed to companies to support their development of tissue-engineered products. More than 100 of his articles have appeared in peer-reviewed publications and he has been a speaker at lectures worldwide.
Mooney is described as being in a class of his own for the depth, breadth, and extent of his teaching, research, and service. It is not often that an individual can excel in each of these areas. Mooney is exemplary in all of them.
In addition to his academic duties and research, Mooney has served on various departmental search committees; the Schools Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Committee; and also served as a member of the Universitys Faculty Advisory Committee for the Life Sciences Initiative.
