Ann Arbor, MI - August 3, 2000 - More than 300 orthodontic residents from 45 graduate programs in the United States and Canada will be in Ann Arbor Friday through Sunday for the annual Graduate Orthodontic Residents Program (GORP). The program, which is hosted every other year in Ann Arbor, was organized in 1989 by two orthodontic residents - Dr. Gary Starr and Dr. Patrick Nolan - and Dr. James McNamara, the Graber Professor of Dentistry at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. The program is the only nationwide meeting of specialists in either dentistry or medicine that occurs while the specialists are in their residency program. Among those who plan to attend this weekend's program include the presidents of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Board of Orthodontists, and the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation. Speakers include Dr. Thomas Kluemper, chair of the orthodontics department at the University of Kentucky. He will address the residents following a dinner Friday evening at the Michigan Union Ballroom. Saturday morning, Dr. David Sarver of the University of North Carolina and Dr. Anthony Gianelly of Boston University will address the group on esthetic treatment and orthodontic treatment mechanics. In the afternoon, Rosemary Bray, a practice consultant from San Diego, will speak on hiring staff for the orthodontic office. Sunday, Dr. Vince Kokich of the University of Washington will speak on excellence in orthodontic treatment. All will speak at the Mendelssohn Theater. "GORP provides future orthodontists with the opportunity to meet both professionally and socially before they graduate from their program," said Dr. McNamara who is the faculty organizer of the 11 previous GORP meetings. "This meeting benefit them and the patients they treat since many of the newest technological treatment advances will be presented."
