Reviewing minority female enrollment since 1981, 19.2% were of Asian descent with a big increase in the late 1990s and early 2000s. African Americans have been fairly steady at 10.7%, averaging 4.7 students per year. Many fewer Hispanic (3.2%) and Native American (0.3%) women have enrolled, however, that may be a regional difference. Nationally, in 2010-2011, of all students, Hispanics and Native Americans made up 6.3% and 0.5% respectively.

After a glorious start graduating Ida Gray in 1890, the University of Michigan dental program did not graduate another African-American woman until Joan Lanier in 1975. Since then numbers have fluctuated between one and seven, with an average of 1.5/year. Was race an obstacle and was there a quota? Perhaps not as there was one African-American man, and sometimes more, in many classes during the same period.
