Financial Aid

Most eligible students are offered a financial aid package through the U-M's Office of Financial Aid, which generally comes from a combination of:

  • Grants: gift funds, based on need, that do not have to be repaid;
  • Scholarships: awarded based on academic achievement, special talents, financial need, and other criteria specific to individual programs. Scholarships also do not need to be repaid;
  • Work-Study: wages earned through employment. Students work part-time for eligible employers and earn up to the amount awarded; and
  • Loans: funds that must be repaid, with interest, after you are no longer a student.

U-M Scholarship Programs

The U-M Office of Financial Aid administers a variety of scholarship programs that recognize superior academic achievement, leadership qualities, and potential contribution to the scholarly community of the university. Some scholarships are based on financial need; others reflect the university’s commitment to achieving a diverse student body.

During the admissions process, all freshmen and transfer students are automatically considered for most of these scholarships and for others offered by U-M schools and colleges. Please visit The Office of Financial Aid's Scholarship & Grants page to learn which ones require an additional application or information.

To be considered for scholarships based on financial need, you must also apply for financial aid. If you are selected for a university scholarship, you'll be notified in writing by mid-April.
