Externship Program

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Externship

The University of Michigan Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers an externship program to dental students who are interested in pursuing a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The duration of the externship is from one to four weeks. During this period the extern will gain insight into the life of a resident by attending morning rounds, daily clinics, operating room cases, trauma call, and all educational activities. This experience will provide the student with the opportunity to evaluate his/her own interest in the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery and, in particular, our program. We accept externs at any time throughout the year with a limit of one extern per week. Externships are offered on a first come first served basis. To qualify, you should have completed a basic clinical course in oral and maxillofacial surgery and be competent in dentoalveolar surgery and the administration of local anesthesia. You should also be in good academic standing.
