Coordinator, Endodontology Annual Review Course

Dr. McDonald graduate from the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand and received his endodontic education and a Masters degree in Oral Biology, from the University of Maryland at Baltimore.  He serves as a Clinical Professor of Dentistry and the Division Head and Graduate program director of Endodontics at the University of Michigan.
 
His research interests are electronic apex locators, instrumentation systems, and endodontic surgery, especially regeneration techniques.  He has interests in the ethical and legal aspects of endodontics and the use of human subjects in clinical research. 
 
He is a past president of the Phi Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the Maryland State Association of Endodontists and is a recipient of the American Association of Endodontists Award of Merit and an honorary member of the Svrakov Academy, Sofia, Bulgaria.  He is a Diplomate of the American board of Endodontists, a member of the Royal Australasian College of Dentists [Specialist Stream, Endodontics] and sits on the Board of the Michigan Association of Endodontists of which he is the President []2008-2009].

Description of Research Area(s):

Dr. McDonald is involved with endodontic assessment of apical anatomy and electronic apex locators, both in vitro and in vivo.  He is also involved in clinical trials to assess the outcomes (success, failure) of endodontic surgery.
