Edward J. Billy, D.M.D., clinical professor of dentistry and director of Graduate Prosthodontics Program in the School of Dentistry, retired from active faculty status on May 31, 2006.

Professor Billy received his D.M.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry in 1966. After a year of internship at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Pittsburgh, he spent two years concurrently serving a prosthodontic residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Pittsburgh and instructing dental students at the University of Pittsburgh. He entered the Navy in 1969 as an assistant prosthodontic officer. He received many promotions, including serving as chair of the Prosthodontic Department at Naval Dental School for four years before retiring in 1992. In 1991, he began serving as a visiting lecturer in the Prosthodontic Residency Program at the Naval Dental School, a position he still holds. He came to the University of Michigan in 1992 as a lecturer then became a clinical assistant professor in 1993, a clinical associate professor in 1997, and a clinical professor in 2001.

In 2001, Professor Billy became the director of the Graduate Prosthodontics Program within the School of Dentistry. The program excelled due to his leadership, expertise and ability to communicate. He introduced new courses, improved the financial structure, and initiated renovations to the clinic. Under his guidance the success rate of the students to pass their specialty boards in Prosthodontics has increased significantly. He was named "Instructor of the Year" by the third-year dental students in 1996 and 2000, and he also received that honor from the fourth-year dental students in 2000. In 1999 and 2000, he was again named "Instructor of the Year" by the dental fraternity, Delta Sigma Delta.

Professor Billy serves as an examiner for the North East Regional Board of Dental Examiners for the Specialty Prosthodontics, and he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics. He serves as an interviewer for the Navy Scholarship Programs, as well as serving on the Admissions Committee for the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He has had articles published in the Journal of Periodontology, the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, the Journal of Dental Research, and the International Journal of Prosthodontics.
